October 18th marks the release date of a brand new album from Polish supergroup Innercity Ensemble (featuring members of Stara Rzeka, Alameda collective and Kapital). Entitled "IV", the album consists of 8 brand new tracks that will take the listener far from band's improvising roots.
"This time we decided to focus more on the post-production, including edits, overdubs and remixes," explains Jakub Ziołek (guitar, voice). "This was driven mainly by the outcome of our recording session as well as a simple will to push our music further than before," he adds.
One of the biggest surprises this time comes from Ziołek himself who decided to add vocals to 3 tracks, a move previously more in place with his other projects. "And that's exactly why I decided to do it," Ziołek laughs. "Innercity Ensemble was an instrumental band from the very beginning but I must admit that I have a constant urge of trying new things. What I enjoy most in music are nice songs," Jakub says.
What makes Innercity Ensemble stand out is also the attitude that ignores members' musical backgrounds, their technical skills and their instruments of choice. What really matters is their ability to listen to each other. "If you'd make me describe this collective from the genre standpoint, I would choose 'fusion' since my favourite music is created not within genres but between them," Ziołek explains.

Innercity Ensemble is a free-from improvisational musical collective combining 7 different personalities from different
sonic backgrounds:jazz, post-industrial, noise-rock, electronic (musicians from HATI, SING SING PENELOPE, ED WOOD, GROBBING THRISTLE, STARA RZEKA). Their music is full of discrete melodies and subtle rhythms - somewhere in between meditative ambient music and percussive trance...more

This is--it's almost rock, almost prog, and in the middle of the 3 longer pieces almost experimental. It reminds me strongly of some of the material on LAM, as well as being rhythmically similar to Saagara 2.
If you know of Zimpel only through his free jazz material, this will surprise you. Except for the middle parts of the 3 longer works, he's buried in the mix, with Ziolek taking center stage. This actually works rather well, IMO. sumbuk

This record has such a magical flow to it, it seems to capture so directly the ups and downs of life, the joy of music and dance, and it's just so damn catchy and fun to listen to as well. Giles

My god, what an absolutely incredible Suite. I'll admit, I've struggled to get into Pharoah Sanders due to diving headfirst into some of his most challenging catalogue and that never worked. This is the perfect place to restart. Floating Points is new for me and I can honestly say I've never heard synthesizer music this lush and organic before. the LSO is just perfect. This is one of those albums that any serious music fan needs in their life. The perfect swan song for the great Pharaoh! 5/5 ClassyMusicSnob
